Education Background
Li Fuguang, a plant geneticist by training, received his BSc degree of Science(1989) from the China Agricultural University, China, and his PhD in Molecular Biology (2003) from the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China.
Research Area
Dr. Li has established a system of large scale of transformation on cotton. Agrobacterium-mediated transformation is the most widely used method of plant transformation. Futhermore, grafting has been applied to make the regenerated plants survival ratio to more than 90%. “High efficient regeneration system of using matured cotton tissue” which had been patented used petiole as the explant, has improved the transform ratio of CCRI 24 significantly. Using the purified lines from CCRI 24, a system of large scale of transformation on cotton has been established, this makes cotton become a crop which could be genetically engineered by a large scale of candidate genes. 156 candidate genes came from 24 labs in China have been validated in Dr Li's lab.
Dr Li has provided many lines to the resource of cotton breeding. 32 cultivars have been bred from these lines, and the grand total planting area of these cultivars has reached to 6.7 million hectares.
As the leading scientist of the innovative team of genetic improvement of resistance of cotton, he also researched on the mechanism of cotton drought tolerance and provided many transgenic materials to breeder in recent 5 years. The team members are as follows:
