“China-US Agro-geoinformatics Summer School 2014”, jointly organized by the Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning (IARRP), the Graduate School (GS) of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and George Mason University of United States (GMU), has come to a successful conclusion from August 4-15, 2014. Over 20 students from different universities of USA, Canada, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Philippines and China attended the training program.

The purpose of the summer school is to understand and learn the fundamental concepts, methodologies, and recent research advances in agro-geoinformatics, as well as the agro-geoinformatics applications in China to enhance the China-US further cooperation on agro-geoinformatics. This was the second time for IARRP to organize such kind of training program. And the first China-US Agro-geoinformatics Summer School was held in July, 2013 in Beijing.

The summer school included both classroom lectures and field trips. 9 renowned scientists from GMU, National Agricultural Statistics Service of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-NASS), Agricultural Research Service of United States Department of Agriculture (USDA-ARS), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, IARRP and GS gave lectures on “Remote Sensing and Agro-Geoinformatics Technology for Large-scale Agriculture Monitoring”, “Web-service-based Monitoring and Analysis of Global Agricultural Drought”, “Agricultural Data Collection in U.S.”, “Agricultural Land Use Change and its Effect on Food Security in Northeast China”, “Remote Sensing in Cotton Farming”, “Mapping Crop Acreage and Growth Conditions Using Earth Observation in Canada”, “Impacts of Global Change on Food Production Systems”, “Agriculture Drought Monitoring & Assessment”, etc. The students also visited Huailai Remote Sensing Test Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to further understand crop remote sensing monitoring and soil parameters collecting system.
